1. Why is Kinsta our first choice for managed WordPress hosting?
We recommend Kinsta because it takes much of the technical hassle off the business. A lot of the security requirements and general upkeep are managed by the host. That gives a business owner less technical work to get bogged down in.
This is the basis of our recommendation. We are not claiming that Kinsta wins every possible comparison or that every business needs the same hosting setup.
Managed WordPress hosting also does not remove the need for technical support altogether. WordPress generally still needs someone with know-how, whether that is a person within your business, a freelancer or an agency.
Treat hosting and access to WordPress support as related decisions. Choosing a managed host reduces the work you need to take on, but you should still know who to contact if something serious happens to the site.

Before choosing an alternative, ask what work would remain with your business or whoever supports your WordPress site. If you cannot describe that responsibility, you do not yet have enough information to make the comparison.
Price can be part of the decision. We would also ask what technical help you will need alongside the plan, so the hosting purchase reflects how you intend to run the website.
3. When is running your own server worthwhile?
Running your own server gives you complete control. That may justify considering it when you have complex requirements, particularly questions around data sovereignty.
It is not our default recommendation for most businesses. Complete control needs a specific purpose. Before taking that route, identify the requirement a managed setup cannot meet and the person who would take responsibility for the server.
Data sovereignty needs particular care. It was raised as a possible reason to investigate a custom setup, not as proof that businesses with data-location requirements must self-host. Confirm the requirement before deciding on the architecture.
We have dealt with a client whose WooCommerce site ran on a self-hosted server and crashed during Black Friday. That experience informs our caution about choosing a setup to save money without understanding the responsibility attached to it. It does not establish that every self-hosted site will fail.
